Rope Rescue - Box Canyon
TRSAR rope rescue team was paged out at approximately 11am. A youth had been
rappelling off the cliffs at Box Canyon with a group of experienced rappellers
from the Phoenix area. He was located on a ledge on sheer cliff approx. 80
feet from the edge of the canyon.
Eleven members of TRSAR responded to the rescue, five of them with rope
certification. All who responded were very much needed and appreciated. The
group of rappellers were more experienced than most and had been using
helmets, belay, etc. Possibly the belay person in charge of the belay rope at
the bottom of the cliff was hit by a falling rock and let loose of the
belay rope. The youth dropped quickly, attached to the working rope, landing
on the ledge with a resulting serious leg injury.
