Anonymous donation inspires cause

Editor:
As Commander of the Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Squad, I would
like to express my profound appreciation to you for the
outstanding article and photograph regarding Project
Lifesaver, which appeared in the Roundup on Feb. 25, 2005.
When we went to Richard and Martha Roy's house to take their
picture, I shared the interest, urgency and emotion I felt
about this project. This enthusiasm was expertly reflected in
the story. As a direct result of Teresa McQuerrey's article,
Project Lifesaver has received positive comments and
much-needed donations from many people.
Allow me to tell you what happened recently. I work part time
at the Payson Athletic Club. There is a member of the gym who
comes in to attend an aerobics class before going to work.
While stopping at the front desk to check in, he said to me,
"Dave, I saw the story about Project Lifesaver in the paper,
and I'd like to donate to this project." I said, "Great, it
will be much appreciated."
I was not expecting much, but it all adds up and all is
appreciated.
After he handed me the check, I looked at it and said, "This
is a thousand bucks!" He said, "I know; I would like to be
anonymous, but I would like you to write a story challenging
those in Payson to match my donation. I'd like to see this
project implemented before we have another tragedy."
Needless to say, I was in awe at this man's compassion and
generosity.
It is one thing for someone to read about a cause and be
sympathetic, and quite another thing to donate hard-earned
money toward its support. I feel this story has inspired
people toward that higher goal of actual contribution.
I can't thank you enough. The emotion and urgency Tonto Rim
Search and Rescue has felt about Project Lifesaver is now
being felt by many others, thanks to you.
