LOCAL NEWS
Well, I missed the last meeting. Forgot about
it until Mike called. Still missed it due to other plans.
And what’s this we hear about Miss Ellie having
a little problem with the boat ramp while on vacation? Yep, she
sure did. Crashed and burned!!!! But from what Mike tells me they
still had fun. Seems that right at the beginning of the “trip” (no
pun intended. Oh yes there is!!) Ellie tripped on the ramp while
disembarking. Did some serious damage, like breaking her leg!!!!
She spent the rest of the trip doing wheelies on the Promenade Deck
in her wheel chair. We hope you are healing up Ellie. God bless
you.
MISSIONS
April 24 – Tonto
Natural Bridge – Carryout – Pine/Strawberry Fire contacted the
Sheriff’s Office and requested our assistance with a possible
carryout of a female subject that was suffering from heat
exhaustion. Twelve members responded. By the time most of the
members arrived the subject was removed, placed in the ambulance and
being transported. Thanks to all that came to help.
May 7 -- Bear
Flats Trailhead -- Injured Hiker -- The Sheriff’s Office requested
assistance at the Bear Flats Trailhead for a female hiker that was
at first reported to have lacerations and a broken leg. Upon
arrival at the scene the subject’s leg was not broken but did have a
large laceration on the back of the knee. The subject was litter
carried out by nine members who responded. Thanks to all. It was a
pretty tough carry.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Weren’t we the
“Busy Little Beavers.”
May 20,21 -- Four
Peaks -- Lost male hiker on the Maricopa County side -- Two days of
search, unable to locate the subject. Thanks to all that came out.
It was very, very hot and dry. The foot searchers came back in
pretty sad shape. The subject was not located. There are some good
photos on the Azneighbor website for those that have access to a
computer.
May 21 -- Overdue
party, Pyle Ranch -- male left home and did not return -- Later he
called relatives in Iowa to advise he was okay and not to worry
about him. Apparently they were having family problems at home.
Thanks to all personnel that assisted.
May 21 -- Deceased
person -- 911 call to the Sheriff’s office of a possible deceased
person at the Upper Fossil Creek Trailhead. An off duty Fire
Department EMT checked and confirmed the death. Since almost all
personnel were in the Pyle Ranch area, there were only two SAR
members that could respond. First report was the subject was four
miles down the trail. After the Deputies arrived, it was found that
he was only a few hundred yards. The Deputy was able to drive to
the location and transport back to the Trailhead. Thanks to those
who responded.
May 21 -- Injured
hiker/swimmer -- Good ol' Box Canyon -- Male subject had fallen off
cliff and had dislocated a shoulder. Rope team and many others
responded. Sgt. Shepherd and Dave Murphy attended him. They were
exhausted by the time the subject was out. It was a successful
mission and some valuable lessons learned. There are two trees that
are not sufficient for a haul system even though they appear so.
But there is one farther back that is. Thanks to Charlie Conover’s
attentive ears, it was a successful and safe mission. Charlie some
unusual noises emitting from the tree base. A new anchor point was
found and all went well after that. Thanks from all to Charlie. A
big thanks to all that attended.
Remember, even
though you are not rope certified and don’t want to go over the edge
doesn’t mean we don’t need you. The rope team thanks all that
responded for their help. They can’t do it without you.
